About 50 years ago (can't believe I'm
this old) I would audit some of my husband's architectural lectures;
and between them I would have time to browse the Yale library.
Remembering some of my mother's family stories, I started looking
up the Olds name in the genealogy section.
Eventually I found R. E. Olds' ancestral
tree in a Burke's Commoners (not Peerage) edition. This brought
to mind the story of my grandfather's childhood: i.e. moving in
with a different family and not knowing of his connection to R.
E. until he was invited to a family reunion. It is not a close
connection (each had the same immigrant ancestor, Robert Ould)
but enough to pique my interest.
About 10 years and 5 children later, my
father forwarded to me a letter of inquiry into our family. This
letter was from Vera Yerington, who later published a book about
the Olds family. Being rather busy at the time, the letter was
tucked away for about 30 years. When I rediscovered it, my children
were grown and off on their own endeavors, and I was free to pursue
"GENEALOGY"!
